Magnetix

Maybe you have heard of the new trend? Magnetic nail polish? Yes, I thought so. It's nail polish that has iron powder mixed in and will make a design when near a magnet as the iron shavings align with the magnetic field. I'm taking physics, can you tell??

Anyways,China glaze released a line in February, I think. I recently picked up a bottle at Sally. It was $6.99 for the magnet and also $6.99 for the magnet . . . which I thought was a bit of a ripoff.

When I first heard about this type of polish, the magnet was included, built INSIDE the polish lid. But I guess when you don't get the designer brands, it's not as convenient. I picked the deep royal blue color. Here is the bottle:

The magnet:

The magnet has three designs. Stripes. Star. Chevron.

The directions and the back of the magnet:Notice the groove by each magnet so you can rest it on your finger without touching the actual to the polish.

The directions say to apply one coat and hold the magnet over the nail (without touching them together) for 5 to 10 seconds. Seal with top coat.

Well.. here is my first (failed) attempt. It just looks like a blob.

Problem: it dries REALLY fast. I tried again and it was better. You have to work really fast because once it dries, the magnet has no effect anymore.

You can see the star pattern, thought it's off center.

My next attempt was good too. It's just plain stripes.

Problem: the magnet is flat and nails are curved, which means the edges of the nail have no design. So I tried to get all three designs in one shot. Star on the left, stripes in the center, and chevron on the right. I could never get the chevron to work and look decent.

Here is the final product, all stripes.

Overall, I was a bit disappointed.

When I realized you have to move the magnet over the nail immediately after painting, it was hard to keep neat. I don't usually paint fast so when I had to paint fast for it to work, it was getting on my fingers too. And it would be really difficult to paint my left hand, having to move so fast. Also the design would fade a little after you move the magnet away. This is understandable, since the magnetic field is gone and there is nothing to hold the iron shavings in place.

So I think I will try again. I will paint one coat and let it dry. Then paint a second coat and use the magnet. Then top coat. Hopefully that will work better. Possibly more pictures to follow.
